Dog Obedience Training

Dog obedience training is an important tool for anyone who owns a dog. Our special friends need to learn their canine manners, and dog obedience training is the only sure way to guarantee Fido’s obedience! Our special doggie pets must be taught certain social manners. A dog cannot just do as they please, when they please! There are specific techniques taught in dog training. Of course all puppies and dogs must be house or potty-trained. We cannot have our furry friends relieving themselves on our nice carpets. So dog obedience training uses specific commands on when it is time to go outside to do their business.

One of the more common dog commands is “Sit”. The dog’s hindquarters are gently pushed down into the sitting position, while simultaneously using the command “Sit”. This dog obedience training technique will eventually be ingrained into the dog’s memory, so that after a period of time, when you say “Sit” to your dog, they will execute that command. Sometimes you can catch your dog naturally beginning to sit, at which point you will say “Sit”. Soon all you will need is the simple voice command.

One of the more difficult obedience commands is “Heel”. This is very important when out walking your dog on a leash. The command “Heel” means precisely what it sounds like, the dog walks at your heel, beside your side, without yanking and pulling on the leash. Many times the dog trainer will use a special dog collar called a “choke chain”. This is a special chain collar that will tighten up slightly if the dog tries to pull forward. The tension is immediately released naturally once the dog “Heels” at your side.

One of the more important dog obedience training lessons is for when your dog is off-leash, such as in a park. You do not want your dog running off after anything and everything at their own whim, so the dog must be taught to “Come” on command. A good obedience training technique is to use some sort of reward, such as a yummy piece of cheese or specially formulated dog treats. Once the dog realizes that every time they respond appropriately to the “Come” command, they get a special goody.

Another important obedience lesson is for the dog to “Stay” on command. Many times dogs like to run and jump on neighbors, and so must be taught to stay when you give the command. This can be a little more difficult to train into the dog. The trainer must maintain eye contact, and will usually keep a hand raised in the air to keep the dog in place. Only when the “release” command is given can the dog be allowed to return to the owner. There are more sophisticated dog obedience lessons that can be taught over time, such as guard or attack dog training. But these are only to be taught by highly skilled dog trainers, and are not for the amateur. Dog obedience training is an important part of socializing our furry friends for a happy and orderly living environment.
